ON CERTAIN MOTORCYCLES, IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THE 3RD AND 4TH TRANSMISSION GEAR (SHIFT) WHEELS MAY NOT BE SECURELY SEATED ON THE INTERMEDIATE SHAFT. CONSEQUENTLY, WHEN ATTEMPTING TO SHIFT FROM 5TH TO 6TH GEAR, ENGAGEMENT OF THE TWO GEARS MAY OCCUR SIMULTANEOUSLY. Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE MOTORCYCLES AND REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION GEAR BOX IF NECESSARY. OWNER NOTIFICATION IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING DECEMBER 2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT BMW AT 1-800-831-1117, OPTION #4.
We checked Transport Canada's recall database for this make, model and year.

On certain motorcycles, the crimp-type hose clamps along the fuel line may not have been installed properly and could leak. Fuel leakage in the presence of an ignition source could result in a fire. Correction: Dealer will inspect, and if necessary, adjust all crimp-type hose clamps.
On certain motorcycles, the signal from the ignition lead of the secondary spark plug on the right hand cylinder could interfere with the oxygen sensor signal and cause the engine management control unit to reset. As a result, throttle response can be poor to the extent of engine misfire. Correction: Dealer will reroute the oxygen sensor cable.
On certain motorcycles, the rear brake hose may split open during riding conditions in which a full extension of the rear suspension occurs. As a result, a loss of brake fluid and brake pressure can occur. Correction: Dealer will replace and reroute the rear brake hose.
On certain motorcycles, the 3rd and 4th gear (shift) wheels may not be securely seated on the intermediate shaft. Consequently, when attempting to shift from 5th to 6th gear, engagement of two (5th and 6th) gears may occur simultaneously. If this happens, the gear wheel may crack resulting in a loss of transmission capability, or, a lock of the transmission may occur. If the latter occurs, the rear wheel may lock which, depending upon traffic and road conditions, and the rider's reaction, could affect the stability of the motorcycle. Correction: Dealer will replace the transmission gearbox.
