Free MOT history check, with every MOT mileage reading charted
GOV.UK lists each MOT. We draw every mileage reading recorded at an MOT on one chart, flag any reading lower than the one before, and add failures, advisories, recalls and model reliability. Free, with no sign-up and no cookies.
A free check shows:
- Mileage recorded at each MOT
- Mileage drops flagged
- Failures and advisories
- MOT due date
- Unfixed recalls
- Look up by reg or VIN
What's in the report
Everything DVSA publishes about a vehicle's MOT history, laid out so problems stand out.
Mileage chart
The odometer reading from every MOT on a timeline. Any reading lower than an earlier one is marked, so a clocked car stands out.
Every MOT test
The date and result of each MOT since 2005, with the reasons for any failure, and when the current MOT runs out.
Advisories
The minor defects and advisories testers noted, which often show what will need fixing next.
Reg or VIN
Look a car up by its registration or by its VIN, in miles as the MOT recorded them.
Recalls
Whether DVSA lists an unfixed manufacturer recall, plus EU recall alerts for the model.
Model reliability
How often this model and year passes Norway's periodic inspection first time, against all cars that age.
What a free check can't tell you
- Outstanding finance Finance agreements are held by private registers and aren't public. A paid finance check covers these.
- Write-offs and theft Insurance write-off categories and police stolen-vehicle records aren't published as open data.
- Mileage between tests Readings are taken at each MOT only, so a drop shows which period to ask the seller about.

Frequently asked questions
Is this MOT history check free?
Yes. The data comes from DVSA's MOT history service, which the government publishes for free. There is no paywall and no account.
How far back does MOT history go?
DVSA holds MOT tests in Great Britain since 2005. For Northern Ireland, tests are available from 2017.
How do I spot a clocked car?
Look at the mileage chart. Each MOT records the odometer reading; a reading lower than an earlier one is marked, and could be a clocked odometer or a typing error at the test centre.
Does it show write-offs or outstanding finance?
No. Those records are held by insurers and finance companies and aren't public. A paid check covers them.
Can I check a car without its reg?
Yes. Enter the VIN instead (usually 17 characters).
